WhatsApp now has ads. Here is how they work.
Meta announced WhatsApp Status Ads at Cannes Lions in June 2025. After a phased rollout that wrapped up in December 2025, Status Ads became available globally in Q1 2026.
They are full-screen vertical ads that appear between Status updates in the Updates tab. If you have ever seen Stories ads on Instagram, the experience is nearly identical. You are tapping through your contacts' Status updates, and an ad slides in between two of them.
The key distinction: WhatsApp Status Ads only appear in the Updates tab. Private chats, group chats, and calls remain completely ad-free and end-to-end encrypted. Meta has been very explicit about this boundary, and it matters. The messaging experience itself has not changed.
Where they appear (and where they do not)
When a user opens WhatsApp and taps the Updates tab, they see Status updates from their contacts. Status Ads appear between those updates, clearly labeled as "Sponsored." The format is full-screen, vertical, and tappable.
Three places you will never see ads on WhatsApp:
- Private chats. One-to-one conversations remain encrypted and ad-free.
- Group chats. No ads in group conversations.
- Calls. Voice and video calls are untouched.
Beyond Status Ads, Meta has introduced two other monetization features in WhatsApp: Promoted Channels (paid visibility for WhatsApp Channels in the Updates tab) and Channel Subscriptions (premium content behind a paywall). Status Ads are the one that matters most for advertisers right now because they plug into the existing Meta Ads Manager workflow.
Ad format specs
Status Ads follow the same creative dimensions as Instagram Stories. If you already have vertical creative for Stories or Reels, you can repurpose it.
Dimensions and format:
- Aspect ratio: 9:16 (vertical, full-screen)
- Resolution: 1080 x 1920 pixels
- Video length: up to 90 seconds (shorter performs better, aim for 15 to 30 seconds)
- Image file size: up to 16MB
- Video encoding: MP4 with H.264 recommended
- Audio: AAC, 128kbps stereo
Safe zones:
Keep the top 250 pixels and bottom 250 pixels free of critical content. The top area is where the status bar, username, and close button sit. The bottom holds the CTA button and swipe-up prompt. Text or logos in those zones will be partially covered.
CTA buttons:
The available call-to-action options are "Send Message" and "Chat on WhatsApp." Tapping either one opens a WhatsApp chat directly with your business number. This is different from typical web ads. There is no landing page in between. The user goes straight into a conversation with you.
How targeting works
WhatsApp does not read your messages. It never has. Status Ads targeting uses a different set of signals than what you might expect from Facebook or Instagram.
The targeting inputs:
- Country and city. Geographic targeting at the country and city level.
- Language. The language the user has set on their device.
- Followed Channels. If a user follows WhatsApp Channels related to fitness, cooking, or business news, that signal informs ad delivery.
- Previous ad interactions. Whether the user has tapped on WhatsApp ads before, and which types.
Notice what is missing: no browsing history, no app activity tracking, no cross-platform pixel data. The targeting is intentionally limited compared to Facebook and Instagram. Meta is keeping WhatsApp's privacy positioning intact while still offering enough signal to deliver relevant ads.
You set up targeting through Meta Ads Manager, the same interface you use for Facebook and Instagram campaigns. Select "WhatsApp" as a placement, and configure your audience the same way you would for any Meta campaign. The difference is in the available signals, not the workflow.
Campaign objectives
Not every Meta campaign objective supports WhatsApp Status Ads. The ones that do:
- Messages (recommended). Optimizes for people likely to start a WhatsApp conversation with your business. This is the highest-intent objective for WhatsApp and the one most businesses should start with.
- Engagement. Optimizes for interactions with your ad.
- Traffic. Drives clicks to a URL or WhatsApp chat.
- Awareness. Maximizes reach and impressions.
The Messages objective is the natural fit here. When someone taps your Status Ad, they land in a WhatsApp chat with your business. From there, your team or an AI agent can qualify the lead, answer questions, or book a meeting. No form fills. No landing page bounce. Just a conversation.
What it costs
WhatsApp Status Ads are priced on a CPM basis (cost per 1,000 impressions), just like other Meta placements. Early data from advertisers running Status Ads alongside Instagram Stories shows CPMs that are 30 to 50 percent cheaper than equivalent traffic campaigns.
Why? The inventory is new and competition is still low. WhatsApp has 1.5 billion daily users in the Updates tab, but advertiser adoption is in the early stages. That supply-demand imbalance means lower costs for early movers.
This will not last forever. CPMs on Instagram Stories were also cheap when they launched. As more advertisers adopt the format, prices will rise. Right now, the arbitrage window is open.
One note for EU markets: some European countries are seeing a gradual rollout due to regulatory review under GDPR and the Digital Services Act. If you are targeting EU audiences, check placement availability in Ads Manager before building your campaign.
Who should use WhatsApp Status Ads
Status Ads work best for businesses that already handle conversations on WhatsApp, or want to start. The CTA sends people into a chat, so you need someone (or something) on the other end.
Strong fit:
- B2B companies with sales teams. A prospect taps your ad and lands in a WhatsApp conversation. Your sales rep or AI agent qualifies them immediately. No web form, no email follow-up delay.
- E-commerce brands. Product questions, size guides, order support. All handled in the same chat the customer started from the ad.
- Service businesses. Consultants, agencies, clinics, real estate. Appointment booking through conversation converts better than a form.
- Businesses running click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook/Instagram. You already have the chat infrastructure. Status Ads are one more placement feeding into the same flow.
Weaker fit:
- Businesses with no WhatsApp presence. If nobody is monitoring incoming chats, the ad spend is wasted.
- Pure awareness campaigns with no conversation follow-up. You can run awareness objectives, but the real value of WhatsApp ads is the direct chat entry point.
What this means for WhatsApp marketing
Status Ads are the first time Meta has given businesses a paid acquisition channel inside WhatsApp itself. Until now, the only way to drive WhatsApp conversations through paid ads was click-to-WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram. Those still work. But Status Ads add a native touchpoint: you reach people while they are already inside WhatsApp.
For businesses already doing WhatsApp marketing with broadcast campaigns, message templates, and automation tools, Status Ads are a new top-of-funnel channel that feeds into the same conversation flow you have already built.
The combination is powerful. Status Ads bring new contacts into WhatsApp conversations. Those conversations convert into opt-ins. Those opt-ins become part of your broadcast audience. And that audience has 98% open rates compared to 20% for email.
WhatsApp is no longer just a messaging app businesses use for support. It is becoming a full marketing platform, with organic reach through Channels, paid reach through Status Ads, and direct communication through the API. The businesses that build their WhatsApp infrastructure now will have a significant head start.
