BlogWhatsApp AI Agent for Business: What It Does (and Doesn't)

Most "AI chatbot" articles skip the part where it fails
Every WhatsApp chatbot guide promises the same thing: automate everything, close sales while you sleep, never hire again. The pitch is always better than the product.
This post is different. We sell a WhatsApp AI agent (ConvertChat's, specifically). So we'll tell you what it actually does well, where it breaks down, and when you should pick up the phone yourself. If our agent isn't the right fit, we'd rather you know now.
What a WhatsApp AI agent does
Here is what actually happens when a business connects an AI agent to their WhatsApp Business API number.
It answers product questions instantly. A buyer asks about stock, specs, pricing, or shipping at 10 AM on a Tuesday. The agent pulls from your product catalog, checks the data you've fed it, and replies in seconds. No "we'll get back to you." No ticket number. An actual answer.
It qualifies leads. Not every message deserves your sales team's time. The agent asks the right questions (budget, quantity, timeline), scores the lead, and routes the ones worth pursuing. The rest get helpful answers without burning your team's hours.
It closes the next step. This is where most chatbot articles get vague. "Closes sales" means different things for different businesses. For a wholesaler, the next step might be a purchase order link. For a consulting firm, it's a booked call. A good AI agent handles both: it can send an order link or drop a calendar booking, depending on what you've configured.
It works when you don't. Many B2B buyers browse after hours. A distributor in a different time zone, a restaurant owner checking supplies after closing, a procurement manager catching up at midnight. If your only option is "leave a message," you lose those conversations.
Hi, I saw your offer on hydraulic fittings. Do you have DN25 rated for 400 bar?
Yes, we carry DN25 up to 420 bar in carbon steel and stainless. What quantity do you need?
Around 200 units. Can you deliver to our warehouse in Barcelona?
No problem. I'll prepare a quote for 200x DN25 stainless with delivery to Barcelona. Let me book a quick call with our sales team to confirm specs and lead time. Does Thursday at 10:00 work?
Works for me.
Done. Calendar invite on its way. Talk Thursday.
That pattern repeats constantly: buyer asks a specific question, agent answers from product data, conversation moves to a concrete next step in under two minutes.
Chatbot vs AI agent: the difference matters
The terms get used interchangeably. They shouldn't.
A rule-based chatbot follows decision trees. "If the customer says X, reply Y." It works for simple FAQ flows (store hours, return policy, order tracking). It breaks the moment someone asks a question you didn't anticipate. In B2B, buyers ask questions you didn't anticipate constantly.
An AI agent understands natural language, holds context across messages, and generates responses from your product data. It doesn't need a pre-built flow for every scenario. When it doesn't know the answer, it says so and escalates to a human instead of looping through irrelevant menu options.
The trade-off: AI agents cost more and require good training data (your product catalog, pricing rules, company policies). A chatbot with three buttons is cheaper and faster to set up. If your support needs are genuinely just "here are our hours" and "here's the tracking link," a simple chatbot is fine. You don't need AI for that.

Meta Business Agent: what it means for costs
Meta announced its own AI agent for WhatsApp Business at Conversations London in June 2026. It launches August 1, 2026 at $2.00 per million tokens, roughly $0.04 to $0.05 per message.
This is a building block, not a ready-made solution. Meta gives you the model. You still need to connect your product catalog, build qualification logic, set escalation rules, and integrate with your CRM or booking system. If you have a development team, it's a compelling option. If you don't, you need a platform that wraps it for you.
The per-token pricing means costs scale with conversation length. Short exchanges (2-3 messages) stay cheap. Long qualification flows with detailed product questions add up. Monitor your average conversation length before committing to a volume estimate. For a detailed breakdown of all WhatsApp API costs, see our pricing guide.
What AI agents can't do
Most vendor articles skip this part.
Complex negotiations. If a deal requires custom terms, volume discounts with approval chains, or multi-stakeholder sign-off, AI handles the opening. A human closes it.
Emotionally charged situations. A frustrated customer who's received damaged goods needs empathy and authority to fix the problem. AI can log the complaint and escalate. It shouldn't try to resolve it alone.
Edge cases outside your data. The agent knows what you've taught it. If a buyer asks about a product you haven't cataloged or a shipping route you haven't covered, the agent should escalate, not guess. Hallucinated answers erode trust faster than a slow human reply.
Human escalation is not a failure. The best AI agents are the ones that know when to hand off. If your AI agent never escalates, it's probably giving bad answers to questions it shouldn't be handling.

Free alternatives (and their limits)
You don't have to pay for an AI agent. But understand what you're giving up.
WhatsApp Business app quick replies. Free. You set up canned responses triggered by keywords. No context awareness, no follow-up logic, no product catalog integration. Fine for a solo business answering the same five questions. Not viable at scale.
Basic chatbot builders. Several automation tools offer rule-based chatbot builders starting around $29 to $49 per month. They handle structured flows well. They fail on open-ended questions because there's no language model behind them.
Build your own with the API. If you have developers, you can connect the WhatsApp Business API to any LLM and build a custom agent. Full flexibility, but you own the maintenance, the prompt engineering, and every edge case that comes up.
EU AI disclosure: a note on compliance
If you operate in the EU, the AI Act requires transparency. Users interacting with an AI system must know they're talking to AI, not a human. This applies to WhatsApp AI agents.
Your agent's first message (or your welcome template) should make it clear that responses are AI-generated. "You're chatting with our AI assistant" is enough. Don't hide it. Buyers don't mind AI if it's helpful. They mind being deceived.
How ConvertChat's AI agent works
ConvertChat is a WhatsApp remarketing platform. The AI agent is an optional add-on at EUR 49/month on any plan.
What it does: learns your product catalog and company knowledge (text, URLs, documents), answers WhatsApp messages in your brand's voice, qualifies leads based on questions you define, and closes the next step. That next step is either a booked call (sends a calendar link) or a completed order (sends a checkout or order link), depending on your business model.
What it doesn't do: replace your sales team, handle returns, or run broadcast campaigns. It handles the conversations that come in after a broadcast or from your email-to-WhatsApp funnel. Your team focuses on the qualified leads it surfaces.
Setup: ConvertChat's team configures your WABA, handles Meta verification, and helps train the agent on your catalog. You don't need developers or an API integration. Full pricing details on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a WhatsApp AI chatbot cost?
Free options exist (WhatsApp Business quick replies, basic bot builders from $29/mo). AI-powered agents that understand natural language range from EUR 49/mo (ConvertChat add-on) to custom enterprise pricing. On top of that, you pay Meta's per-message fees for every template sent. Meta's own Business Agent costs $2/1M tokens from August 2026.
Can a WhatsApp AI agent send messages proactively?
No. The AI agent responds to incoming messages. Proactive outreach (broadcasts, campaigns) requires approved message templates sent through the API. The agent handles what comes back.
Will my customers know they're talking to AI?
They should. EU AI Act requires disclosure. Beyond compliance, transparency builds trust. Most buyers don't care if it's AI as long as they get accurate answers quickly.
What happens when the AI doesn't know the answer?
A well-configured agent escalates to a human. It should never fabricate an answer. ConvertChat's agent flags the conversation for your team and tells the customer that a human will follow up.
Can I use a WhatsApp AI agent in the US?
For responding to incoming messages, yes. For proactive marketing broadcasts, no. Meta paused marketing templates to US numbers (+1) in April 2025, with no announced end date. The AI agent only responds to conversations customers start, so it works regardless of the pause.
